How to Stay Safe as a Solo Digital Nomad (Without Living in Fear)
If you’re thinking about becoming a digital nomad, especially as a solo (female) traveler, staying safe is probably one of the main things on your mind.
As it should be!
But please dont confuse staying safe with constantly assuming the worst. That’s no fun.
Staying safe while you travel simply just means being prepared, aware of your surroundings at all times, and being confident in your ability to take care of yourself by all means necessary.
If you’re new to the digital nomad lifestyle, How to Become a Digital Nomad: A Realistic Step-by-Step Guide lays the foundation for planning safely from the start.
Safety Starts Before You Arrive
Most safety issues can be avoided with the right preparation.
Before arriving somewhere new, I always make sure I:
- Research specific neighborhoods, not just cities
- Read the most recent reviews of the places I’m booking my accommodations
- Save multiple offline maps and emergency contact phone numbers
- Learn basic cultural norms and phrases if you don’t speak the native language
Preparation practices like these can help remove any unnecessary surprises, which honesty, is half the battle.

Choose Accommodations That Help You Relax
Where you stay matters WAY more than where you explore.
One thing I always do when traveling alone is prioritize places that feel secure, well-reviewed, and are very easy to access. Feeling safe in my temporary “home” is the first steps to making everything else feel much easier.
Another thing that gives me extra peace of mind is staying well organized and keeping a low profile when I’m out. I always pack my anti-theft crossbody bag instead of carrying bulky or flashy items.
Trust Your Intuition (Seriously)
Your intuition is one of your strongest tools (especially as a woman).
If something FEELS off, that’s literally all you need to leave. You do not need physical proof. You don’t owe any one, or any place politeness at the expense of your safety.
The more you start to listen to your intuition, the stronger it will become!
Digital Safety Matters Too
Don’t neglect digital safety, it’s easy to do! Your phone and laptop should be your lifelines when living as a digital nomad.
This means making sure they’re both always charged. I’m not the best at this sometimes, but when I travel I try my ABSOLUTE BEST to make sure I’m constantly charging (or somewhere where I can charge) my devices. One way to ensure I stay on top of this is to always keep a portable power bank with me so I’m never stuck without access to maps, rides, or communication.
Small things like this can go a very long way.
Get Familiar with the Area

Safety isn’t just physical. It’s an emotional thing too.
Finding a regular cafe, a common walking route, or even a popular coworking space that you go to routinely to help you feel more grounded and confident in new places.
Familiar places have a special way of helping us feel more grounded.
You’re Stronger Than You Think!
The thing I love about solo travel is that it shows you how resourceful and resilient you really are.
Confidence grows through experience, not perfection.

You don’t need to live in fear to be prepared. You just need awareness, intention, and the ability to trust in yourself.
